WHAT IS MONTESSORI EDUCATION?

Who is Dr. Maria Montessori?

Maria Montessori was born in Italy in 1870 and died in Holland in 1952, after a lifetime devoted to the study of child development.

Dr. Montessori was a true pioneer. The first woman to qualify in Italy as a doctor of medicine, she became increasingly interested in the needs of children.

By 1900 she was Professor of Pedagogy at the University of Rome. Her early work centered on women’s rights and social reform and evolved to encompass a totally innovative approach to education. Her success in Italy led to international recognition, and for over 40 years she travelled all over the world, lecturing, writing and establishing training programs. In later years, "Educate for Peace” became a guiding principle which underpinned her work.

Dr. Montessori developed her ideas into a fully articulated education program, which is thriving in many countries throughout the world in both private and public school systems.

What is Montessori Education

The Montessori Method is a systematic approach to the education of children. It is much more than a method of childcare or general schooling. It is a whole attitude of care and respect for children. Montessori students develop independence, responsibility, concentration, respect, patience and, most importantly, a love of learning.

The Montessori approach to education is child centered and is based on mutual respect and cooperation. The teacher in a Montessori classroom is more of a guide and facilitator respecting the concentration and varied learning approaches of the children. Non-aggression and non-interruption, tolerance and concern for others are stressed.

Benefits of Montessori Education

  • Children develop a lifelong love of learning.
  • Children develop a sense of achievement and self worth.
  • Children learn through experience and their own actions.
  • Children take greater responsibility for themselves and their education.
  • Children develop initiative, self-motivation and persistence in completing a task.
  • Children develop independence, responsibility, concentration, respect, adaptability and patience.
  • Children develop self-confidence, self- esteem and self-discipline.
  • Children build on their innate sense of order and desire to complete a task.
  • Children develop creative self-expression and co-operation.
